Analgesia and sedation are frequently administered to critically ill patients in order to ease their pain and anxiety, enable invasive treatments, lower their stress levels and oxygen consumption, and enhance synchronization with mechanical breathing. Untreated agitation and pain trigger the sympathetic stress response, which can have detrimental short- and long-term effects.
